The Silk industry
How did the industrial revolution affect the millworkers and the production of silk? During the visit your class will split into groups which rotate around 3 different sessions. Each session is delivered by an enthusiastic member of our experienced education team.
SESSION 1: PARADISE MILL TOUR
Visit Paradise. You can tour the mill with an experienced guide. See how important the Silk industry was to Macclesfield. Consider what life was like working in a Victorian mill. There is currently no lift access to the mill and it is accessed by a number of steps.
SESSION 2: Artefact handling
During this session the children are introduced to artefact handling. They explore a number of artefacts linked to the Silk Industry being encouraged to investigate them and ask questions of them.
By the end of the session the children should know the process by which a silk product is made.
The session is very hands on and includes question asking and group work.
SESSION 3: Weaving
This craft session is an opportunity for your class to show off their creativity. The activity reinforces the language around weaving and looms introduced in the other sessions.
Each child will get a small cardboard loom to do their weaving on and they will take their weaving away with them.
