Marianne Brocklehurst
1832-1898
Egyptologist, animal rights activist and founder of Macclesfield’s first public museum, Marianne Brocklehurst defied the expectations placed on her as a Victorian woman to make her mark on Macclesfield.
With her life-partner, Mary Booth, Marianne assembled the collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities on display in the museum today and wrote a beautifully illustrated diary of her first of five trips to Egypt in 1873-4.
Women Who Made Macclesfield
by the History Hunters
Through their work with the museum collections, our History Hunter volunteers have rediscovered the stories of three fascinating women who made Macclesfield.
Coincidentally, all three happen to share the same first name - Annie.
